Blanco Drain Natural Treatment System

The Blanco Drain Natural Treatment System is a groundbreaking solution to nitrogen pollution in the Salinas Valley, where intensive agriculture threatens local waterways and contributes to a “dead zone” in Monterey Bay. Designed by FlowWest in partnership with the Resource Conservation District of Monterey County, this innovative bioreactor uses a cutting-edge vertical flow design to remove 99% of nitrates from agricultural runoff. Built in 2022, the system has outperformed previous treatment methods and offers a scalable, nature-based approach that farms can implement to protect water quality and restore ecological balance.

Dennett Dam Removal

Originally built in 1935 to create a swimming hole, Dennett Dam blew out and was rebuilt twice. The third time it washed away, all that was left was a jagged, steel sheet pile wall that blocked fish passage and prevented safe boating.
