In the face of drought and water scarcity, urban water supply and demand data are vital for informed planning at all governmental levels, and for the public. These data are collected by multiple California state agencies resulting in datasets that are not compatible and ultimately not available to support data informed decision making.

Facilitating Change through Open Data
The California Water Data Consortium's urban water reporting project focuses on identifying opportunities to reduce redundancies, minimize reporting burdens, and better align data for both state agencies and reporting entities. Addressing these challenges requires existing urban water data that is usable and publically accessible. FlowWest harnessed our expertise in open data and schema development to gather and compile disparate data sources into a usable format.

Unlocking the Power of Usable Water Data
Making data open and usable is the first step toward aligning data reporting requirements and management needs. We envision continuing our work with Consortium and State to support a data management system that provides improved access to data and information necessary for urban water management during droughts and periods of water scarcity.
