Three sites along Santa Rosa Creek present passage barriers to steelhead trout and other native salmonids. In addition, aging flood control infrastructure was in need of repair or replacement, presenting the opportunity for a win-win solution for habitat enhancement and flood control.
Improved Infrastructure
Sonoma Water hired FlowWest to provide design and permitting support for improvements at these three sites. The project replaced an aging fish ladder, repaired eroded bank armoring, and constructed a step-pool structure at an aging dam. These improvements were designed to reduce maintenance needs like sediment and debris removal, while improving fish passage and flood control performance.

Reduced Maintenance, Better Fish Passage
The project was completed in October 2023. Floodplain managers will benefit from improved maintenance and salmonid species from easier passage for years to come.
