Supporting reliable water supplies and healthy ecosystems starts with understanding how water moves. In the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta and Suisun Bay, changing flows influence everything from fish migration and food availability to harmful algal blooms and the sediment that sustains wetlands. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation needs timely, reliable information about these interconnected conditions to operate the Central Valley Project, continuing data collection at long-standing stations.
Connecting Monitoring to Management
The Continuous Flow and Water Quality Monitoring Network brings together field science and data analysis to make these changes visible. Monitoring stations track water movement and water quality, while targeted sampling provides a closer look at nutrients, algae, and suspended sediment. FlowWest developed suite of software tools to help field teams and reviewers streamline data entry, ensure quality and publish data for the people managing the Delta’s water and habitats.
Better Information, Healthier Ecosystem
By connecting what is happening in the water to the decisions made about it, this project helps Reclamation balance water delivery with ecosystem protection. The information supports daily operations, improves models used to evaluate management options, and helps researchers understand whether restoration actions are producing the intended benefits. Together, these efforts build a stronger foundation for managing water supplies and sustaining the fish, food webs, and wetlands that depend on a healthy Delta.
