Data Scientist / Software Engineer
We are seeking to hire a full-time Data Scientist/Software Engineer to join our data science team working on water resources, ecological restoration, and other environmental projects.
The ideal candidate will be excited to work with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software developers, environmental engineers, and environmental planners to deliver solutions to multi-objective natural resources challenges. This position will provide opportunities to contribute to making science and knowledge accessible and transparent by supporting Open Science efforts and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles. This position is remote (US work authorization required), with the potential for in-person work at the office location in Oakland, CA if desired. This position may require travel for up to 10% of your working time to meet with teams and clients. Only US-based candidates will be considered and candidates should be willing to work during the Pacific Time Zone normal business hours.

Required skills/attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a STEM field (e.g. statistics, mathematics, physics, econometrics, computer science)
- 2-10+ years of experience in a data science, software engineering, or related fields
- Proficiency with a scripting language for data analysis and visualization such as R or Python
- Knowledge of statistics concepts and modeling
- Experience with Git version control and asynchronous workflows using tools like GitHub
- Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
- Great communication skills with the ability to distill complex information to technical and non-technical groups through data visualization and technical writing
- Knowledge of data management best practices and metadata standards
- Basic experience or understanding of general natural sciences (i.e. ecology, biology, etc.)
Desired skills/attributes:
- 4+ years of experience in data science, software engineering, or related fields
- Proficiency in data architecture with the ability to design and implement data systems for a variety of applications
- Proficiency in SQL
- Proficiency in JavaScript
- Experience with Tableau
- Experience with Campbell Scientific LoggerNet
- Knowledge and experience with California water operations and modeling
- Design skills
- Comfort and/or experience with conducting outreach to diverse parties to coordinate data collection
